Indoor Plants That Help You Sleep

There is nothing worse than waking up from a night of tossing and turning. Difficulty sleeping leads to lower productivity and lack of energy, and let's face it, no one wants to wake up feeling like anything but their best self. There is one thing that never fails to bring new energy, and that is nature. Many studies show that being surrounded by nature helps lower cortisol levels and blood pressure. It also boosts immune function, triggers relaxation, and plants purify air by absorbing odours and moulds that can impact breathing and lung health. This is exactly why it's a great idea to keep indoor plants by your bed to help purify your room. In fact, NASA recommends between 15-18 air purifying plants for a 1800 square feet home. We've put together some of our favorite bedside plants to get you in the spirit. 

JASMINE

Jasmine is a bushy and trailing plant with delicate white or pink flowers. Jasmine is known to lower anxiety, which helps lull you to deeper, more restful sleep.

Keeping a jasmine plant in your bedroom at night will contribute to increased alertness and productivity during the day. Plus, it has a delicate and refreshing scent!

PEACE LILY

Aside from being beautiful, the peace lily has many unique abilities that most people are unaware of. It's able to filter the air inside of your house of two dangerous compounds: benzene and formaldehyde.

It will also help add a bit of humidity back to rooms that are too dry, usually around 5 to 10%. If you are suffering from dry skin or a dry mouth, that might be all you need to get a little bit of relief.

LAVENDER

Lavender is a genus of 39 known species of flowering plants in the mint family and a commonly used essential oil. It not only smells wonderful, but can also reduce anxiety and stress, slow heart rate, improve your sleep, and calm restless babies.

ALOE VERA

Listed as one of NASA’s top air-improving plants, the fantastic Aloe vera works much like the snake plant – it emits oxygen at night, making for a more restful slumber. It is also one of the easiest plants to grow and maintain – it tolerates ‘neglect’ well and doesn’t require frequent watering.

SNAKE PLANT

It is one of the most recommended plants for improving indoor air quality. The snake plant is a hardy and easy to care-for plant. Snake plant is actually recommended as a great “filter” to improve oxygen purity in your home.

It is perfect for the bedroom with low maintenance and cost. What is great about this plant is that it emits oxygen at night whilst simultaneously taking in carbon dioxide – something we naturally produce when breathing out.

    I love plants & would have them all over my house but I have to be careful of them around my cats. They like to bite & eat the leaves! Some plants are dangerous to cats & could hurt them. Thank you for this insightful article about plants that help us sleep better.
